In the UK there are 3 levels of licence: Foundation, Intermediate & Full & they must be obtained in that order. To obtain a Foundation or Intermediate licence you must pass a multiple choice exam & there are a number of practical activities that must also be completed successfully. The Full licence is obtained by only passing an exam. The Foundation & Intermediate licences have restrictions placed on them that restrict the power & frequencies that the licensee is allowed to use. The Full licence allows the licensee to operate up to the maximum power allowed on all available amateur radio bands.
